4 stars I really liked it Crossposted to Gothic Book Reviews gothicbookreviews.tumblr pThis book is a combo of a gothic novel and a ghost story probably my two favorite genres It tells of Bliss House s construction and early history, a story that s continued in two later books Bliss House and Charlotte s Story I haven t read either of these, but I m going to seek them out now.I m trying to avoid too many spoilers here, but this book has three points of view told in alternating chapters three wom [...]
To say that I ve been eagerly awaiting to read this book is an understatement I have read and loved the previous two books in this series and I have been waiting for what it feels like a long time for this book to be released. You don t have to have read the previous two books in this series since the stories in these books take place after this book To be honest, now I feel like re reading those two books since I have the back story to everything that is wrong with the Bliss house The Abandoned [...]
I read this book without reading the other two books in the series and it was fine as a stand alone novel it is a prequel to the series, therefore you aren t missing anything from the story if you choose to read this one first This book is being billed as a gothic ghost story, a haunted house story, and in that respect it falls a little short as the book mainly focuses on Randolph, the main character, his first and second wives, and his mistress although she was an unwilling mistress, so I don t [...]
Awesomeawesome awesome If you haven t started this series GET ON IT Perfect time of year to read themThis book makes me want to go back and reread Bliss House to connect the overlapping stories
I m not into gothic novels so some of this book left me cold That said, it was a good read, though I think the first two were better, trying to tie up too many loose ends some of which could have been left alone Yet some of it was still left up in the air I guess the biggest is what made Randolph the evil man he was Or was it just that he was a truly evil man Had he not been the main character I m sure one of the others would have done him in before this book Special Thanks to Pegasus Books for [...]
So disappointed I read recommendations for this book and the jackets on each book in the trilogy seemed interesting but I only made it to Chapter 4 of this first book and have stopped reading So far I have read about orgies, under aged and unmarried sex, whores and concubines not thrilled with this content I m keeping this book on my Read bookshelf so I can refer to this review if I should ever forget and check out this book again The other two books in the series have been deleted from my Want [...]
Actual rating would be 3.5, but I bumped it up because I received this book from a giveaway I ve had it sitting in my house for quite awhile and I really should have taken the time to read it sooner I enjoyed it and liked it better than the second one I liked the characters and the way the story flowed in this one I also enjoyed the way the stories intertwined and how I could relate certain things to the previous books Overall, it was an enjoyable series.
I only wish there was an option to rate a book in the negative The only good thing I can say about this book is I am glad I did not buy it but got it from my local library I thoroughly enjoyed Bliss House but the two preceding novels have been drivel Instead of atmospheric gothic novels like the original they have been filled with sadomasochistic abuse of women I could not even finish this novel it was so bad. This author has been added to my list of authors not to read
A good Gothic story unexpected twist towards the end, though it didn t quite feel earned The characters are well thought out.
I won this book through a giveaway I didn t realize it was a gothic horror book It creeped me out too much and there was no way I was finishing it.
Randolph Bliss is warned against building his home on the land he has his heart set on But Randolph is nothing if not set in his own ways And so, Bliss House is built, in all its glory and, for some, terror Kiku, Randolph s young mistress, witnesses the home while still in progress She is brought from New York to Old Gate in the house s early days to provide comfort and to the rich businessman And even though she is set apart from the family and the main house, hidden away in the property s woo [...]
From the outside, Bliss House appears genteel, elegant, a gem of a venue for Society But inside its walls and its grounds, things happen People behave in ways they might never in the full light of day or anywhere away from Bliss House Bliss House a mansion with an evil history and secret rooms, decorated with unlucky omens the natural habitat of madness and perversion ghosts and secrets the unclean center of the Southern Gothic world Laura Benedict creates in The Abandoned Heart, the prequel to [...]
The third book in the Bliss House series Having read all three of Benedict s Bliss House novels, I can say that I enjoyed this novel but not as much as the earlier two The story definitely had all the twists and turns that I expected to see, and it tied up all lose ends that the previous novels had laid It was an enjoyable read I just liked the first Bliss House novel best. The story follows three women and their lives while at Bliss House under Randolph Bliss control Each woman s experiences sew [...]
This a fabulous gothic novel I gravitate towards the gothic genre and this one is a ghost story as well There are 2 other books in this series that I have not read but this certainly works as a standalone Bliss house is a great mansion built by Randolph Bliss the the character at the center of this story Despite dire warnings not to build on this particular piece of land he proceeds The tragic story is told from three perspectives, his first and second wives and his Japanese mistress as he desce [...]
I won all three books of this series from I liked these books and they were very well written I had problems reading the books at times because of what the men did to the women in these books Evil is what the men were and the writer leaves me wondering if it was bliss house that caused it all or not I did like these books but I don t think id reread them.
The latest in the Bliss House series is a great read Laura Benedict has written three great novels with intrigue, mystery and super natural Not my usual genre but loved all three books in this series.
