Finally read this, only approximately a year after I was supposed to Had the distinct luxury of hearing Mr Kipen talk about this book in amusing and animated detail, so the theory itself was already known to me What really works for me about this book is that, though the title seems to imply that the screenwriter should be lauded instead of the director, ultimately the book s tone encourages us to consider film much of a collaborative medium than we do And it reaffirms something I think Finally [...]
David Kipen asks who s responsible for Hollywood s best movies In an edgy and funny manifesto, critic David Kipen says au contraire to that old film school theory the auteur theory that gives all the credit to the director.Instead, in honor of the mother tongue of America s first screenwriters, Kipen uses the Yiddish word for writer to coin The Schreiber Theory, which decrees that knowing who wrote a movie is often a far better guide to knowing whether the movie will be any good or not.Kipe Davi [...]
Kipen s manifesto is lively and concise, if not terribly in depth The first half sketches an argument for a writer centric film history, but serves as an indictment of auteur theory His thesis isn t so much that we should adopt The Schreiber Theory as that it is at least as good as auteur theory, and writers deserve consideration. The second half of the book is a few capsule profiles of writers whose work has been of a certain quality and often focused on repeated themes.
Kipen s book is much manifesto than densely laid out history, and as such it s lively and provocative, if sometimes a bit shallow Still, his passionate argument ranking screenwriters above directors in importance makes an intriguing attack on the traditional auteur theory, and his mini bios of major screenwriters and lists of their work provide much inspiration for future movie watching.
I kind of lost interest during the introduction, when he admits he just wants to debunk the auteur theory than he wants to prove or argue anything else I guess I can give it 10 pages though Yeah, no I can t.
Dunny, literate and timely, avec the recent writer producer disputes on the overlooked role of scribes in films Disclaimer The author is my pal But read it anyhow he makes offbeat, amusing and intelligent points.
A short, informal manifesto calling for an end to the auteurist theory of film criticism for one screenwriter centric Sure, why not, though it doesn t address the inherent problem of assigning credit blame for such a collaborative project as filmmaking.
